Driving from Miami to Boston, with all my possessions in tow, I bought a very damaged copy of Thomas Pynchons Gravitys Rainbow, which took me 2 years to read. Somewhere within those 2 years, a painter friend showed me Frank Auerbachs paintings of London in ruins after the Blitz. These works showed a city in mid flight, at once being built and
